EO&GEO Series: Drones in Geographical Applications

Ultra-high spatial resolution imagery from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), coupled with the latest advances in image processing algorithms, has led to emerging opportunities for researches from environmental sciences research... As such, drones are allowing new applications and niche markets to be defined through new sensors and developments in communications and increased real-time autonomous response capability. Building on this ecosystem developed by UAVs, this Webinar aims at providing a platform that will accommodate the latest research and application results related to the use of drones in a wide range of environmental and geographical applications. Thus, we have invited experts in different research fields demonstrating the use of drone technology presenting the state-of-the-art findings, and applications as well as providing insights into the future of drone technology.

Dr. George P. Petropoulos (PhD, King’s College London UK) is an Assistant Professor in Geoinformatics at the department of Geography, Harokopio University of Athens Greece. His research is focusing on the exploitation of technologically advanced EO sensors and synergistic multi-sensor EO modelling & GIS geospatial techniques for obtaining spatiotemporal estimates of key state variables characterising land surface processes. He is author/co-author so far of +110 peer-reviewed journal articles, +30 book chapters, and editor/co-editor of 6 books published by Elsevier and Taylor & Francis. He has developed so far fruitful collaborations with key scientists in his area of specialisation globally, and his research & teaching work so far has received international recognition via several significant awards he has obtained.

Salvatore Manfreda is Full Professor of Water Management, Hydrology and Hydraulic Constructions at the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, University of Naples Federico II. He started his career as research associate at Princeton University in the period 2004-2005. He has been researcher and assistant professor at University of Basilicata in the period 2006-2019. He has been appointed as visiting professor at the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies al Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) from 2008 up to 2010. His research activities focus on distributed hydrological modelling, flood risk assessment, stochastic processes in hydrology, river monitoring and UAS-based monitoring. He has been the Chair of the COST Action HARMONIOUS – “Harmonization of UAS techniques for agricultural and natural ecosystems monitoring”. His research activities lead to more than 120 publications on peer reviewed journals, book chapters and proceedings. Among others, he edited the book “Unmanned Aerial Systems for Monitoring Soil, Vegetation, and River Systems” by Elsevier. He is currently in the editorial board of Ecohydrology, Hydrology, Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UASs and UAVs), and Drones.

Dr. Prashant is working at IESD, Banaras Hindu University as Senior Assistant Professor and worked with Hydrological Sciences, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on SMAP satellite soil moisture retrieval algorithm development, instrumentation and simulation for various applications. He received his PhD degree from Department of Civil Engineering, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK. The doctoral dissertation primarily focuses on the use of optical and microwave satellite (SMOS) synergy with Weather Research and Forecasting for terrestrial applications. Prashant was the recipient of several awards such as NASA Fellowship; USA; University of Maryland Fellowship, USA; Commonwealth Fellowship, U.K.; Early Career Research Award (ECRA, DST, India), CSIR as well as UGC fellowships. He is leading number of projects funded from reputed agencies in India as well as world. He is also a collaborator with NASA JPL on SMAP soil moisture calibration and validation as well as Scatsat-1, NISAR, AVIRIS-NG missions of India. Prashant has made 180+ publications in peer-reviewed journals and published 09 books with reputed publishing house such as Springer, Taylor and Francis, AGU-Wiley and Elsevier and several book chapters with good citation index. He has presented his work in several conferences and workshop and acting as convener for last few years in EGU, Hydroinformatics (HIC) and other conferences. He is also acting as Regional Editor Asia-Geocarto International, Associate Editor of Journal of Hydrology, Water Resources Management, Frontiers Remote Sensing, Associate Editor of Remote Sensing (MDPI), Associate Editor of Environment, Development and Sustainability and several others.

Ionuț Șandric is an Associated Professor at University of Bucharest, Faculty of Geography. He is an experienced scientist with a demonstrated history of working in the computer software industry. Strong information technology professional skilled in GIS Application, Uncertainty Analysis, Spatial Analysis, Earth Observation, Python Programming and Spatial Modeling. He’s research is focused on natural hazards monitoring and modelling, using artificial intelligence, drone, and satellite imagery.
